To help me out my mother gets me Visa gift cards,American Express gift cards, gas station gift cards and sometimes starbucks or restaurant gift cards. She has been getting me these gift cards since 2006. These types of gift cards can be purchased at major drug and grocery stores such as Kroger, Safeway, Vons, Ralphs, CVS, Walgreens and Rite Aid. For years I have never had a problem using a Visa gift card or American Express gift card anywhere. I have used them at several websites, restuarants and fast food places. Over the past year I have still never had a problem. But unfortunatley over the past year there have been some rare instances where independant non-chain restuarants and fast food places will refuse to accept a visa gift card or american express card for payment. This really upsets me! These Visa and American Express gift cards are like cash and should be accepted at any brick and morter establishment that accepts Visa and American Express. While 90-95% of the non-chain fast food and restaurants are willing to accpet these gift cards there are a few places that stubbornly will not accept these gift cards. I don't understand why? Back in May 2008 I went to a small italian cafe for dinner. When the check came I put an American Express gift card on the tray with the bill. When the waiter walked over and picked up the tray he said we don't accept American Express gift cards. I asked to speek to the manager. The manager lied to me and said that if they try to swipe the American Express gift card in their credit card terminal that I won't work. I told them to try it out. They swiped my American Express gift card and were unhappy about it. The manager told me that kids are making phoney Visa and American Express gift cards that get authoirized in their credit card machine and the restuarant doesn't get paid. I knew this was some sort of lie. In July 2009 I went into a small take out style pizza shop that was independantly owned. I ordered two slices and pizza, small salad and a soda. The owner mans the front cash register. I hand a Visa gift card to the owner to pay for my lunch. The owner says to me I don't think this Visa gift card works here. He asked me if it was a real Visa card or not. I told him to swipe the Visa gift card and it worked. He said he is worried that he won't get paid by the credit card company. A year later which happened to be tonight Wednessday July 7th,2010 I went to an independant non-chain restuarant which was a coffee shop type restuarant( like a Cocos, Freindlys, Dennys) type place. When the bill came and I put a Visa gift card that my mom just gave me last week on the tray the waitress said sorry we don't accept Visa gift cards or American Express gift cards. I asked to speak to the manager. He was very rude and told me that his restuarant has had problems with Visa gift cards and American Express gift cards in the past. He siad that is our policy sur! I explained to him that a Visa or American Express gift card is like cash and will work in the restuarants credit card terminal. He refused to listen to me and I was unable to get any further. I argued and told the manager that I have no cash or other credit/debit cards in my wallet. He said he will call the police on me even though I had a Visa Gift card with cash loaded on it. Why is this happening with family owned merchants? A few family and independant merchants refuse Visa Gift cards as well as American Express gift cards. Will this trent grow? Is there anything we as the consumer can do to protect ourselves? How is refusing a Visa Gift Card or American Express gift card different than saying no Bank of America or Chase Visa cards accepted?

Where can i get an american express gift card other than the American Express site? I would like to get one off of a different site because American Express doesn't let you have a separate billing and shipping address as far as i know. UPS left a package for someone with the same name but wrong address... and I already spent it!? A few weeks ago I came home to find a UPS envelope in my front door. It had my name and address on it. The return address on the packing slip was a company that I researched on the internet with no results, and no name or phone number. The envelope contained 4 American Express gift cards, totaling$1300. There was no letter, receipt, card, etc telling me who it was from or anything. I had recently told my family members that I just found out I was pregnant, and my mom had said she would send me "something to help out, with Christmas coming". I assumed it was from her. A week later a UPS guy came to my door and asked if I got a package for a wrong address, I said "no" because I hadn't received anything for someone else (had just woke up and didn't think of "my" package). A few days later he came by again with a form to sign, stating that I received a package to my name and address, which I did sign, as I did receive a package to me at my address. Well, now I keep getting calls from people higher and higher up the chain of command at UPS asking about this situation. I hold to the facts, that I got a package to me at my address, from an anonymous sender, and I used it. They said it was actually for someone with the same name at a different address, and wasn't supposed to be for me. I told her there was no way I could have known this; she suggested I should have called UPS and asked them (well, I asked the delivery guy and he confirmed, it was my address on the package) or tried to track down the sender more aggressively. I said that I was just thankful for the gift that I so desperately needed. So she threatened to call the police and contact their security department. I said that I didn't see where I had done anything criminal, having received and used something that came to me. Without giving me options to work things out, she just basically called me a thief and threatened to call the cops. So now here I am, waiting for the police or UPS men in black or something, and what am I supposed to do? Apparently the cards weren't meant for me, but I didn't know that, and now I've already spent the money on my baby's funeral expenses (no longer pregnant) and have to deal with this stress on top of my emotional trauma. She didn't ask me to pay it back, just started making threats and hung up on me. Where do I stand legally? Am I a criminal or was this an honest mistake? For years I have never had a problem using a Visa gift card or American Express gift card anywhere. I have used them at several websites, restuarants and fast food places. Over the past year I have still never had a problem. But unfortunatley over the past year there have been some rare instances where independant non-chain restuarants and fast food places will refuse to accept a visa gift card or american express card for payment. This really upsets me! These Visa and American Express gift cards are like cash and should be accepted at any brick and morter establishment that accepts Visa and American Express. While 90-95% of the non-chain fast food and restaurants are willing to accpet these gift cards there are a few places that stubbornly will not accept these gift cards. I don't understand why? Back in May 2008 I went to a small italian cafe for dinner. When the check came I put an American Express gift card on the tray with the bill. When the waiter walked over and picked up the tray he said we don't accept American Express gift cards. I asked to speek to the manager. The manager lied to me and said that if they try to swipe the American Express gift card in their credit card terminal that I won't work. I told them to try it out. They swiped my American Express gift card and were unhappy about it. The manager told me that kids are making phoney Visa and American Express gift cards that get authoirized in their credit card machine and the restuarant doesn't get paid. I knew this was some sort of lie. In July 2009 I went into a small take out style pizza shop that was independantly owned. I ordered two slices and pizza, small salad and a soda. The owner mans the front cash register. I hand a Visa gift card to the owner to pay for my lunch. The owner says to me I don't think this Visa gift card works here. He asked me if it was a real Visa card or not. I told him to swipe the Visa gift card and it worked. He said he is worried that he won't get paid by the credit card company. A year later which happened to be tonight Wednessday July 7th,2010 I went to an independant non-chain restuarant which was a coffee shop type restuarant( like a Cocos, Freindlys, Dennys) type place. When the bill came and I put a Visa gift card that my mom just gave me last week on the tray the waitress said sorry we don't accept Visa gift cards or American Express gift cards. I asked to speak to the manager. He was very rude and told me that his restuarant has had problems with Visa gift cards and American Express gift cards in the past. He siad that is our policy sur! I explained to him that a Visa or American Express gift card is like cash and will work in the restuarants credit card terminal. He refused to listen to me and I was unable to get any further. I argued and told the manager that I have no cash or other credit/debit cards in my wallet. He said he will call the police on me even though I had a Visa Gift card with cash loaded on it. Why is this happening with family owned merchants? A few family and independant merchants refuse Visa Gift cards as well as American Express gift cards. Will this trent grow? Is there anything we as the consumer can do to protect ourselves? How is refusing a Visa Gift Card or American Express gift card different than saying no Bank of America or Chase Visa cards accepted?

What's a good credit card substitute? My son's going on a pre college type camp for a few weeks in about a week. We realized that he's going to need some spending money, but after finding dollar bills thrown in his garbage can by accident, I think giving him 200-300 dollars in cash is a bad idea. American Express Gift Cards? My Husband and I had our wedding reception yesterday and we received close to $500 in American Express and Visa gift cards. While, were so grateful to everyone for their gifts, I would much rather turn them in for cash to use toward purchasing a vacation.
