Can gift certificates be used for alcohol in Ontario? My restaurant is giving out $5 gift certificates to local businesses to promote us, one of the managers says they can't be used to purchase alcohol because that's illegal. What do you think about taking back gift certificates that you have given out? Let's say you give a gift certificate to someone. This gift certificate is an online gift certificate that you send to them via e-mail, and they use it on the website. Now let's say you regret giving them the gift, and decide that you would like to take it back. So what you do is you go to the website, and tell them that the original gift certificate got deleted by accident by the person you gave it to. You then get them to void/cancel the current gift certificate's "claim code", and request that they send a new "claim code". However, you request that this new "claim code" be sent to your e-mail address, rather than re-sent to the e-mail address of the person you originally gave the gift certificate to. I now ask you: What do you think of this entire thing? Do you think it is okay to do? If not okay, then how bad is it? I should add that the person who originally received the gift certificate is already aware that they have received it. However, they have not spent it yet.

I do my own bookkeeping and wondering how to appropriately debit/credit my accounts for a gift certificate sold for professional services and then how to account for when it is used (partially). I received the payment just before my last fiscal year-end. What are the adjustments I need to make at start of this fiscal year to show that a particular amount is prepaid for the client's services? (debit/credits) After I've invoiced the client, how do I draw down the amount to reduce the amount of gift certificate/prepayment still available. Am I obligated to honor gift certificates sold by previous owner after the business sale transaction? I purchased a day spa business a month ago. The previous owner gave me $4500 credit towards gift certificate redeem, as she claimed there weren't that much out there.
