Are american express gift cards reloadable?

I have a 50 dollar Am. Ex. gift card that I got for Xmas. I spent 30 dollars for it at hollister, then i bought a 58$ vera bradly bag. Since I had 20 bucks left on my card, i put that towards the bag and then payed the rest in cash. Then i returned the bag the next day, and i gave the lady back my card and she supposedly put the 50 dollars back on the card and gave 8 dollars cash back to me. So can you reload the cards?

1. Apparently you have answered your own question. When you check the gift card the next time you should ask what balance is showing before you use it. If the card says $50.00 you know that the card can be reloaded. In exchanging an item at Sears, I had a balance and the clerk reloaded the card with the amount of the return. The next use confirmed the balance was accurate.
2. Yes. If you sign in and check your balance you can add money from there if you wish. You cannot surpass the limit of the card though.
