What is a perfect gift for a male high school graduate?

This is for my nephew who I don't know that well. I see him once or twice a year and it's just small conversation. I don't want to just give money, as suggested by my sister, as I don't want him just blowing it on useless stuff. I'd like to get him a gift card to Wal-Mart or something for supplies for college, but my sister thinks that's dumb. Any ideas/ My budget is about $20.
