How do gift cards work online?

Let's say I have a BestBuy gift card, I can only use it for BestBuy? Can I use it for Ebay? Walmart? Are there gift cards that I can use for any site online?

1. If you buy a gift card for a specific store, it can only be used for that specific store. Gift cards are not cash and cannot be exchanged for cash. You can get yourself a visa debit gift card. They can be used everywhere visa debit cards are accepted, which is practically everywhere. This includes in stores and online and all you have to do is insert the number on the card.
