How do gift cards work online?

Let's say I have a BestBuy gift card, I can only use it for BestBuy? Can I use it for Ebay? Walmart? Are there gift cards that I can use for any site online?

1. If your card is a BestBuy gift card, it only works at BestBuy. The only type of card that you can use at most any store are ones with a major card processor's name on it - like Visa, American Express, etc. But be careful if you're trying to use a gift card like that to shop online - a lot of the visa gift cards will decline the purchase if you try to buy something with a higher price tag than the balance of the card (not allowing you to add additional payment to cover the purchase). Not sure if American Express gift cards work the same way.
